International Consensus Statement on Skin Tears
Sharon Baranoski, MSN, RN, CWCN, APN, FAAN, DAPWCA;
Kimberly LeBlanc, BScN, RN, MN, CETN(c), IIWCC
Content is based on the podium presentation at CSWC in Washington, DC, taken from the Consensus Paper, Skin Tears: State of the Science, that appeared in September 2011 (Volume 24 Number 9S) Advances in Skin & Wound Care as a Supplement.
The care of patients with skin tears can present a complex problem for healthcare professionals. Despite arguments that skin tears are more prevalent than pressure ulcers, to date there’s still no "universally accepted" definition of a skin tear. This session evaluates the results of an international survey exploring clinical practice and beliefs pertaining to skin tears. A consensus document regarding the risk assessment, prevention, and treatment of skin tears is presented along with several case studies.
